1. Portfolio Size and Risk Management
When trading the global market, it is very important to determine your risk management strategy in advance. It is generally recommended to limit your risk to a maximum of 5% of your total balance on each trade. For example, if you have a balance of USD 10,000 and your risk ratio is 5%, the maximum amount you can risk on each trade would be USD 500. This way, you will not be risking your portfolio on a single trade and even if you incur losses, they will be small.
2. SL Range
SL is the price point you set to limit the loss of your trade. When opening a trade, you need to set your SL level. The distance of this level, i.e. how many pips away it is, directly affects your lot size. The SL range is usually wider in markets with high volatility and narrower in markets with low volatility. For example, if your stop-loss level is 50 pips away, this determines your risk per trade.
3. Calculating the Pip Value
The pip value shows you the cost or profit of each pip movement. A pip is the smallest price change in the Forex market. The value of a pip varies depending on the pair you are trading and the lot size. The value of a pip for a standard lot (100,000 units) is usually 10 USD. For a mini lot (10,000 units) the pip value is 1 USD and for a micro lot (1,000 units) it is 0.10 USD. To calculate the pip value, it is important to know the pip value of the pair you are trading. For example, if you open a trade of 1 lot in an XAUUSD transaction, $100 is involved per 1 pip 1 pip $100 2 pips $200 3 pips $300. You can make calculations like this.
4. Choice of Lot Size
Once the calculation is done, it is important to select the appropriate lot size. Standard, mini and micro lots are available in the Forex market. A standard lot is 100,000 units; a mini lot is 10,000 units; and a micro lot is 1,000 units. By choosing the lot size that suits your trading strategy and risk tolerance, you can both minimise your risk and maximise your potential profits.
